On September 10, 2026, at approximately 8:27 p.m. Pacific, the New Moon occurs in Virgo.

The New Moon is the part of the lunar cycle when the Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun. The side facing us isn’t illuminated, giving us the appearance of a darkened moon.

There is naturally one New Moon during each lunar cycle. On the rare occasion that two New Moons fall within a single calendar month, the second is often called a Black Moon.

New Moons are associated with new beginnings, renewal, birth, introspection, and reflection. A few common practices during the New Moon cycle include setting intentions, cleansing our spaces, making moon water, and quieter practices such as pulling tarot cards, journaling, or even meditation.

A thin crescent moon glowing faintly against a nearly black night sky.
A sliver of moonlight emerges from the darkness, marking the quiet beginning of a new lunar cycle.

The Virgo New Moon

The Virgo New Moon is a good time to set intentions around our routines, introduce new habits, redefine our priorities, and become more intentional about how we invest our time, energy, and attention.

Virgo reminds us that the way we show up for our daily lives is the practice. The result is the life we are living.

A Virgo New Moon invites us to reflect on the practicalities of our lives. What needs support? What routines could be implemented or strengthened to better support our busy days?

This isn’t necessarily the New Moon for naming the big dream out loud.

This is the moon for laying the foundation beneath it.

Because naming the dream is lovely, but eventually we need to be prepared to do the work required to bring it into being.

Virgo and Tarot

The card most often associated with Virgo is the Hermit—the card of quiet introspection, inner knowing, and deeper wisdom.

Also associated with Virgo are the Eight, Nine, and Ten of Pentacles. Pentacles are connected with Earth and the material parts of our lives: work, money, home, health, resources, and the things we are building.

The Eight of Pentacles represents effort and craftsmanship.

The Nine of Pentacles speaks to independence and self-sufficiency.

The Ten of Pentacles carries the energy of long-term stability and wealth.

All very Virgo-coded.

(Below is the layout I am using for a New Moon Tarot spread.)

An Invitation to Read with the Virgo New Moon

If you have a tarot deck, I invite you to spend a little time with these questions. You do not need an elaborate altar or a perfectly timed ritual. You only need your cards, a bit of quiet, and a willingness to pay attention to what comes forward.

Clear your space. That could mean cleaning your table, closing the door, or simply clearing an hour on your calendar.

Light a candle.

Pour yourself a lovely beverage.

Grab your cards, journal, and pen.

Start by sitting with your deck. You might shuffle the cards or simply hold them for a few moments, letting them come to life in your hands and connect with your energy.

I like working with the tarot card associated with the astrological sign of the moon phase, but this is a personal preference. If you want to use the Hermit as a guide for this reading, find the card in your deck and place it at the top of your spread.

Begin by directing the first question toward the Hermit. Then pull five additional cards—either all at once or one at a time, pausing to reflect before moving to the next question.

You can also leave the Hermit in your deck and pull any card for the first question. The cards are yours. The practice is yours. Work with them in the way that feels right to you.

Virgo New Moon tarot spread arranged on a wooden table with the Hermit face-up above five face-down cards, beside a lit candle, tarot deck, journal, and pens.
Using the Hermit as my guide, I ask the cards to help reflect on 5 questions.

The Virgo New Moon Tarot Spread

The Hermit: What area of my life is inviting reflection?

Card One: What in my life needs my attention?

Card Two: What is creating unnecessary complication?

Card Three: What small adjustment would support me now?

Card Four: What deserves more consistent care?

Card Five: What intention am I ready to tend during this lunar cycle?

When you have finished, look at the cards together. There may be an arc to the story, with the Hermit’s lamp lighting the way, showing you the next step forward. Or it might be a little disjointed, each card it’s own story. Notice any cards that feel like a “duh” moment and the ones that you don’t want to look at too closely - those cards might be reflective of Virgo’s shadow - hyper criticism.

You do not need to turn every card into another item on your to-do list. Choose one small thing you are willing to tend.

Return to your reflections throughout the month. If you are planting a longer-term seed of intention, make a note to come back to this entry when the Full Moon occurs in Virgo on February 20, 2027.

What has grown?

What needs more time?

What turned out to be something entirely different from what you thought you were planting?

You do not need to solve everything beneath this moon. Let the cards show you what deserves your attention, then choose one small thing you are willing to tend.
