The Signal: Make Room for the Life You Live

All September, Hearth & Home has asked us to notice how our homes support us, and where we keep tending things that no longer fit. We’ve looked at the work of maintaining a life, the pressure to make a home look a certain way, and the freedom to let it serve the people we are now.

To close the series, let’s make that idea tangible. Choose one small space and turn it into a reminder of what you want to welcome into your life.

Choose a space you’ll encounter every day

Pick a visible corner of a shelf or countertop, or a drawer you open regularly. Keep it small enough to tend in one sitting.

Look for a place still arranged around an old routine, an obligation you’ve outgrown, or a version of yourself you no longer need to keep up with. Ask: What has this space been holding? What could it help me hold now?

Choose somewhere you’ll return to. Spells ask for our participation, even if that participation is just a moment to remember why we cast them.

Set an intention

Before you clear anything, decide what you want this space to be for. It might be a place to gather reminders of the abundance already in your life, a place for gratitude, or a spot that is simply yours.

Keep your intention personal and easy to remember. For example:

I notice what is growing.

I give thanks for what supports me.

There is room for me here.

You can change the words until they sound like you. This is your space.

Clear the space, take a breath, and name what you’re making room for.

Clear and cleanse: Make room for your current life

Remove everything and wipe the space down. Decide what still belongs there, what has another home, and what you’re ready to let go.

If you want to add a cleansing gesture, pass incense or sage smoke through the space, ring a bell, or clap your hands. You can also blow a breath into the empty space. Use what you have.

As you do, say:

Thank you for what you held. I’m making room for the life I live now.

Rebuild and return

Place something in the space that supports your intention. It might be a found stone, a gift from a friend, a photo, or a small bowl where you can leave notes of gratitude. You don’t need to fill it today. Add things as the month goes on, when you find something that belongs.

You might use a small box, bowl, or tray as a sacred container for the things you gather. A postcard, a stone, a note from a friend, or a feather can each hold a memory or remind you of your intention. Your container can sit on the shelf or countertop you chose - or live inside the drawer you open every day.

Revisit the space often. Drop a note into the bowl. Rearrange what’s there. Pause for a breath when you open the drawer. Each small interaction brings you back to the intention you set.

At some point, you may no longer feel connected to this space. That’s okay. It could happen next week, next month, or next season. When it feels stagnant, begin again: choose what you need, clear the space, and rebuild it. Our lives change. Our spaces can reflect that growth.

The Signal: Make room for the life you live, and keep showing up for it.

That brings our Hearth & Home series to a close.

In October, we’ll move Between the Harvest and the Hush, with simple spells to embrace the color, abundance, and change of autumn before the quieter season arrives.
