The Signal: The Harvest Before the Hush
For many witches, the harvest is a season of deep, hands-on work. Gathering what has grown. Working in the kitchen to prepare for winter. Collecting seeds, raking leaves, and putting gardens to bed so they can rest.
Harvest can be loud and colorful. Look at the limbs of an apple tree this time of year, or the stalls at the farmer's market, bursting at the seams. Look at the leaves on the trees - a riot of color, begging to be noticed.
And in a few weeks, the Hush will be upon us. Quieter gardens, naked branches, less daylight, and more introspection as the calendar year begins to wane.
You do not need a garden to participate in the harvest. Maybe you gather memories of a summer filled with friendship and fun. Maybe you look at the books you read, the mornings you journaled, or the walks you took at the park.
Or maybe your harvest is simply a collection of moments that felt sweet. The first star. A stunning sunrise. A pretty bird perched on your fence.

My own bountiful basket holds things from my literal garden, where I harvested not one, but two actual Roma tomatoes - exceeding my wildest dreams. I cut pretty bouquets to place on my dining room table and, most exciting of all, I realized I could supply the state of Oregon with the amount of lemon balm growing willy-nilly in my backyard.
But it also holds memories: the little wild bunny who visited my garden, then returned a few weeks later. Witnessing a lunar eclipse. The numerous books I devoured while sitting outside in the mornings, sipping coffee.
Also tucked inside are the things that helped strengthen the foundational pillars of my life: showing up every week to write my blog, three months of daily journaling after a couple of years of random entries, and consistent gym visits. All things I had to show up for, even when the day felt heavy or, honestly, I just didn’t want to.
So while I add outcomes to my gratitude list, I also add something no one can give me: tenacity. The simple belief that if I want more for myself, I can - and will - be the one to show up for it.
This Week’s Signal: Honoring Your Harvest
Before we begin preparing for the Hush, we take a moment to recognize what has grown, and our part in tending it.
The Tools
One candle
A journal and pen, if you’d like

The Spell
Find a quiet moment. Close your eyes and allow your mind to drift over the last few months. Imagine gathering memories and placing them into a basket.
You might begin with the things you can easily name: something you grew, made, learned, or finished. Then give yourself a little time to remember the quieter things. A kindness. A good laugh. A morning when you felt at peace. A day when you kept a promise to yourself.
Let your basket hold whatever feels meaningful. You do not have to fill it to overflowing. A few sweet moments are a harvest worth honoring.
If you’d like to write down what you’ve gathered, do so now.
When you’re ready, open your eyes and light the candle. Let the spark catching the wick mark the moment you recognize your harvest and offer it your gratitude.
Sit with the flame for a while. Think of what nourished you, what delighted you, and what grew because you kept showing up. Allow the candle to burn in a secure holder, staying nearby and keeping it clear of anything flammable.
When you’re ready to close the ritual and welcome the Hush ahead, gently blow out the candle.
Bless the smoke as it rises, saying:
Bless this harvest and all it holds
What nourished me, what delighted me, and what grew through my tending.
May I carry its sweetness into the quieter days.
May the coming season offer peace, and may I welcome the rest it brings.
Or.... Simply say Thank you. That works too.
Before you move on with your day, take one last look at your basket.
What belongs in your harvest that you haven’t yet given yourself credit for? Witches honor what they have because they know by doing so, they are inviting more bounty to enrich their lives.
A Little About The Signal
The Signal is a weekly practice in noticing what’s already here, and doing something with it. Simple magic we can practice daily to nourish our minds, enrich our lives, and connect us to the beauty everyday life has to offer.
Through these small practices, we honor our ancestors, Mother Nature, and the longing that burns inside each of us to belong to something larger than ourselves. A candle, a quiet moment, a little attention. Everyday things that give us a way to answer that longing.
Every Friday in October, The Signal will focus on the bounty within and around us. We’ll explore candle magic, gratitude spells, color weaving, and even a harvest simmer pot made with simple ingredients from your kitchen and cupboards.
I don’t believe witchcraft has to be expensive to be practiced. I try to keep our tools and ingredients to things you already have on hand, so you can spend your time making magic with what’s here.
If you are ready to begin your magical practice, or are feeling the call to return to it, The Signal is here to facilitate that in simple rituals that reconnect you to your power. Pour a cuppa and sit down. There is room for you here.
