The Signal: Calling in the Light. A Light Spell for Darker Evenings
This time of year, I find myself reaching for the lamps earlier in the afternoon. Lighting candles while dinner cooks. Watching the last sunlight leave the room and deciding what kind of evening I want to have.
Earlier this week, I wrote about enjoying the darker evenings through warm food, quiet activities, and time with people we love. For The Signal, I want to take one of those ordinary comforts - a small light - and give it a magical purpose.

What Are You Calling In?
Perhaps it’s clarity around a decision. Warmth in your relationships. A little creative spark after a long stretch of feeling uninspired. Or joy that has somewhere to land in your everyday life.
Naming is power. Bringing light into a room with intention gives us a moment to name what we need and make room for it. A small lamp, a tea light, a pillar or jar candle - each can become part of this simple spell.
Use What You Have
You don’t need a candle. Sometimes one isn’t available, or you have pets and don’t trust a wagging tail to keep the whole place from catching fire.
Calling in the light can be as simple as switching on a small lamp. The intention is set in that ordinary act.
The Signal - A Spell for Light
Before you strike the match or flip the switch, pause. Name what you’re inviting into your life—warmth, clarity, connection, creativity, or something entirely your own.
When you’re ready, bring the light into the room and offer a few words for what you want to name and claim:
“I welcome clarity.”
“I make room for connection.”
“I call in joy.”
Let those words be yours. Take a moment to notice the light and consider how you’ll participate in what you’ve just called in.

Magic Takes Action
If you’re calling in connection, send the invitation.
If you’re calling in creativity, open the notebook.
If you’re calling in clarity, make a little quiet space to consider the question you’ve been avoiding.
The light gives your intention a place to focus. Your next small action gives it somewhere to go.
When you extinguish the flame or light, offer a simple word of gratitude. Even "thank you" holds power.
The Signal was designed to make practicing the craft easy and accessible. My own practice rarely includes long, complicated steps. I find that my magic is more powerful when I live in it daily, introducing small spells here and there. I start with what I have, and that is often enough.
Let this be an encouraging nudge to set an intention and take one small action to bring your magic to life.
